Board of Education Meeting 2-15-10

February 16, 2010

The Nemaha Valley School board met for the regular monthly meeting on Monday, February 8, 2010.  Items approved on the Consent Agenda included the minutes of the January 14, 15, 18, and 19 meetings; recognition of the Nemaha Valley Middle School Science Olympiad team for placing second in the Kansas Regional Tournament; acceptance of a $750 donation from the Pamida Foundation; and approval of a contract with Jim Long, CPA to perform the fiscal year 2010 independent audit.

The board received two bids for the replacement of the middle school gym floor which was damaged due to a break in a water sprinkler line in early January. The low bid of $92,550 from Lankford Enterprises was accepted.  Acme Floor Company had submitted a bid in the amount of 98,747.  Work will begin in early June and take 6 to 8 weeks to complete.

Following discussion with county commissioner, Gary Scoby, the board accepted the offer from Nemaha County in the amount of $200,000 for the building and property at 709 Nemaha.  Mr. Scoby stated that several departments including the Head Start preschool are being looked at for placement in the building. The offer will be contingent upon an environmental review of the interior of the building.

The board designated direct deposit with an electronic pay stub as the primary means for payroll with the alternative for a paper stub. The requirement will take place at a date to be determined and will save postage, paper and labor costs.

Members approved utilizing services from the Kansas Association of School Boards to conduct meetings in transitioning to a new superintendent.  The service is a part of the superintendent search process which was conducted by KASB.  The board also approved hosting the KASB Fall Regional Meeting on October 21 at the new elementary and middle school building.

Board members heard a report from their school consolidation committee members, Margie Heinen, Gary Niehues and Gale Hunninghake.  The committee has met with committee members from B&B and plan to meet again if approved by the B&B school board at their meeting on February 8.

Members gave Supt. Harris the authority to hire a part-time Spanish teacher for the 2010-11 school year.  The resignation of Tallulah Berkley was accepted and the hiring of Rochelle Enneking was approved to fill that position.
